Background
Brunei Darussalam’s marine and coastal ecosystems are central to its environmental sustainability, food security, and economic diversification agenda. With rich coral reef systems, extensive mangrove forests, and productive fisheries, the ocean plays a critical role in supporting national development priorities under Vision Brunei 2035, particularly in advancing environmental resilience, economic diversification, and quality of life.
As Brunei prepares for Visit Brunei Year 2027, there is a strategic opportunity to position the country as a premium, nature-based destination, anchored on its pristine marine environment. This requires not only conservation, but the ability to translate environmental stewardship into sustainable economic value—through eco-tourism, sustainable fisheries, and emerging blue economy sectors.
At the same time, Brunei faces increasing environmental pressures. Climate change is accelerating ocean warming, coral bleaching, and coastal erosion, while marine pollution—including plastics and abandoned fishing gear—continues to degrade ecosystems and threaten biodiversity. These risks have direct implications for fisheries productivity, food security, coastal communities, and the long-term viability of tourism.
These challenges were strongly emphasised by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin, Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism, in his national statement at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, which highlighted the urgent need to conserve and restore marine ecosystems, reduce pollution, strengthen sustainable fisheries, and mobilise innovation and partnerships for ocean action.
Brunei’s national ocean agenda prioritises four core themes:
-
Strengthening Climate Resilience through Ocean Health and The Protection of Marine Life and Habitats
-
Innovative Aquaculture for Food Security
-
Driving Sustainable Ocean Growth
-
Smart Ocean Governance, Collaboration Powered by Data
